People With Problems
If you've been reading this newsletter, you know I've been looking back through some of my old work. Well, one thing I've noticed along the way is that a lot of my characters have weird problems.
Sometimes these problems are minor, like getting stuck in a beanbag...
Other times, the problems are more serious. Like this guy, who thought it would be funny to attempt a 100-foot belly flop.
Or, equally upsetting, this kid, who poked his straw right through his juice box.
I also realized that a good number of my characters struggle with exercise-related issues. From getting stuck in a tight athletic top...
... to realizing that sit-ups are NOT easy if you have no core strength.
Yes, when it comes to working out, my characters definitely have problems.
Another challenge for my characters: Driving. The people I draw tend to get very stressed behind the wheel.
Other times, the car issues are less intense, but still concerning.
But it's not all exercise and driving. I also noticed that my characters often struggle with strange personal problems. Take a look at these folks.
And then there's a giant catch-all category of "People Who Are Just Having a Rough Day."
Where does all this leave us? I have no idea. But I CAN give you a small piece advice. As I was going through this old art I realized that yes, my characters may have problems, but they also know when to take a break. And they make no apologies for taking that break.
So if you're having a rough day, go easy on yourself and take time out to recharge. Like these folks.
Coming next time: I want to show you some art I did WAY back in the day. As you might imagine, it's ridiculous on many levels.
Also: If you ever have any questions about my cartooning, cards, process, etc., reply to this and let me know! I can answer some questions in future newsletters.
Suggestion: Strange Planet
My new favorite cartoon account is called Strange Planet by Nathan W. Pyle. It's a funny commentary on our life here on Earth. Here's where to find it on Instagram.
Nathan also posts on Twitter and on Facebook.
Here are just two examples of the Strange Planet cartoon:
Oh, and if you follow Strange Plant on Instagram, you'll be able to watch the Instagram Stories, too. Nathan posts funny clips where he films pigeons just doing their thing, then imagines what they're thinking and superimposes those thoughts over the video. It sounds weird, but it's quite amusing.
Finally, you can also follow Nathan's personal Instagram account, where he posts Strange Planet cartoons and other cartoons. All of his work is great!
Songs I'm Enjoying
One of my resolutions this year is to listen to more music. So I thought I'd drag you along for the ride!
In the next several issues of this newsletter, I'll tell you about a few songs I'm enjoying.
Today, the theme is "Catchy Songs With a Cool Vibe."
In no particular order, I suggest you listen to:
- Nevermind by Dennis Lloyd (be sure to snap along)
- Eastside (with Halsey & Khalid) by benny blanco (it's getting a lot of play on the radio but I'm not sick of it)
- 3 Nights by Dominic Fike (gets stuck in my head)
- DUELE EL CORAZON by Enrique Iglesias (such a fun song)
- My Love by Until the Ribbon Breaks (slow and catchy)
An in keeping with this "cool vibe" theme, I also really like this Bossa Nova playlist on Spotify:
I know everyone's musical tastes are different, but maybe you'll enjoy at least one of these songs I've mentioned. And if not, I'll have more suggestions next time!
Oh, and if you feel the need, please go ahead and dance.
Do you have any favorite songs right now? Let me know!
Top Cartoons
I regularly post cartoons on my website, Instagram and Facebook, so follow along!
The following two cartoons were the most popular since the last newsletter.
This one was a helpful reminder to the world:
I sincerely hope you did not wear teal. I saw someone biking that day wearing a teal shirt and I thought, "That person did not see my cartoon!"
The other popular cartoon was this one, from the archives. I pretty much do this anytime anyone turns on a light in a dark room.
