What's Happening on the Home Front
My husband Jack is excited about his new pair of jeans. Is it because they fit well? He likes the color? They're comfortable? No, mainly he loves them because...
Meanwhile, Kate is really excited about a new pen she bought. It's a brush pen, which allows her to create a watercolor type of effect. The other day I saw her talking to the pen and asking it:
She has a ton of pens, and yet she continues to buy more. I think she's planning to bring them with her to college this fall. I'm picturing this scene:
I'm not in a position to judge, though, because I once bought a set of 144 markers and displayed them on special stands all around the bedroom we use an office.
Then I would just sit and stare at them.
Hmmm... you know, now that I think about it, maybe I should offer to babysit Kate's pens while she's away at school.
Yes... I like that idea. I like that idea a lot.
Three Things I'm Enjoying
1. The book Conquer the Day: A Book of Affirmations, by Josh Mecouch
Josh has a comic called Pants that's one of my favorites. (You can find it on Instagram here or on Twitter here.) His cartoons are so weird, but I love them. In this book, he pairs motivational statements with his hilarious drawings, and it's fantastic. Here are a few excerpts:
2. Inventions. I continue to enjoy Unnecessary Inventions. I especially liked the "Stop Snacking Sweater," which has no openings for your hands. Your hands are stuck in the infinity-loop sleeves, preventing you from mindlessly snacking.
But recently I discovered another person making unnecessary inventions: Simone Giertz, a Swedish inventor and professional YouTuber. She created a chair for her dog, and the video went viral earlier this year. You may have seen it.
I saw that video and, intrigued, I went over to her YouTube channel. There I found another great video showing how she made a selfie booth for her dog.
She has a bunch of other videos, too. Some of them are on the long side, but you can always just fast-forward to the end, when she shows off her inventions.
3. The John Mayer Trio TRY! album. You might know John Mayer for his adult-contemporary pop songs. Well, this is different! The John Mayer Trio is a blues rock band that released one album, Try!, in 2005. It was nominated for Best Rock Album and it includes covers of Jimi Hendrix and Ray Charles. If any of this sounds interesting to you, I encourage you to check it out! I've been listening to it and really enjoying it.

My friend Melissa and I made another installment of our "What Would Martha Do" video series. In this one, we each try to organize a problem area in our homes. Watch it here.
I also finished a Hedger Corp story that I started earlier this year. The employees were trying to turn Hedger Corp into a modern, future-forward company. Go here if you want to start at the beginning of the story. Or if you just want to see the new chapters I posted this month, start here.
In the latest chapters, the staff tries to create a self-driving car, among other mishaps.
Fun fact: Kate's boyfriend pulled up to our house as I was setting up all the outdoor Hedger Corp pictures. I was like, "Oh hey. Don't mind me."
Going forward, my plan with Hedger Corp is to post more one-off pictures with captions. I'll still be posting longer stories, but those can be quite involved, and I think it would be fun to do shorter, more frequent posts. You can follow the Hedger Corp Instagram account here. Or I'll post periodic recaps on my website.
Most Popular Cartoons
You can find my cartoons on Instagram, Facebook, and on my website. So follow along!
The most popular cartoon in the past month was this one that I posted for National Siblings Day.
These are all pretty timeless arguments, and it makes me wonder if siblings had similar arguments back in the caveman days. I bet they did.
This cartoon was also popular:
I find that when Jack and I are planning to move something big, heavy or awkward, it's best to just go in knowing that there will be a fight. It's all part of the process.
But the best solution of all is to get Kate to help him, instead of me. Then I let those two hash it out while I hang out with the dog and stay far away.
