We all know about breathing, right? You inhale… you exhale.
You’re probably doing it right now.
Well, here’s a helpful breathing method you can use this week if you find yourself feeling tense or anxious. My friend told me about this… maybe you’ve heard about it too.
You start by visualizing a square, and you place yourself down in the lower left corner.
Then you’re going to inhale for a count of four, while you mentally travel up the side of the square.
Hold your breath for a count of four while you slide along the top of the square.
Now exhale for a count of four as you sink down the right side of the square…
Then hold for another count of four as you move back to where you started.
Repeat this loop a few times, until you feel yourself entering a calmer state.
If you’d like, you can picture a calm, sunglasses-wearing turtle traveling along the square as you inhale, exhale, and hold.
Here it is, all in one image:
If you’re in an irritated mood, you can picture a somewhat irritated character doing it.
Or just picture yourself moving along the square. I’ve been doing this for the past few weeks, and it really does calm the body down.
Who knew that combining two extremely basic things (breathing and a square) could be so powerful!
So go try it out. And have a great week ahead!
Thank you for the turtle traveling around the square. I have known this technique for calming, but never can remember to breathe when having a meltdown. The turtle has made the technique real to me and used it successfully twice today.
Also enjoy your technique for calming when driving rather than having road rage. I call my car “Alrighty”. Middle name is Then. My car is lonely and tries to seek out other cars for company - not to touch them, but just to be surrounded by friends. She shares the garage with a sports car that bullies and is not kind to her. So when I find myself in heavy traffic, I realize she has called some friends over and it helps me get through the traffic jams. “Alrighty Then”!
One my fave things as a
little girl was riding in the elevator. The attendants were always sweet and sat on the little pull-down seat...I'm not little and elevators aren't fun anymore...but your annoyed character IS HILARIOUS. She's sitting on her annoyed little stool...but she reminds me of happy days gone by...and that really helps with now... when I'm just overcome because I'm SO annoyed. Love you and all your wonderful giggles! XO.
