These Monday Motivation emails have turned into notes about how to cope with life. But hey, OK.
And on that note: Do you ever get upset?
I’m going to guess YES, so let me tell you about something I’ve been trying.
Basically, I picture this little character inside of me—and it is the part of me that activates when I get upset.
Here’s what the character looks like. (Yes, it is wearing boxing gloves.)
When I get upset, this character just starts wildly punching at the air.
I imagine the little character punching, punching, punching. It’s so angry! And picturing that is cathartic. But then I tell the character, “I understand! BUT TRY TO SETTLE DOWN!”
And maybe I take a deep breath to help the character settle.
By doing this, I don’t get completely swept away by an emotion. Instead, I remind myself that I’m bigger than any one emotion. Yes, the emotion is something I’m feeling, but it’s not in control of me.
Sometimes, even as I’m upset, I find some amusement in picturing that little character punching the air. This thing is SO dedicated to being upset… you have to admire that.
I don’t know if this is helpful or not, but you can give it a try and let me know.
Have a wonderful week ahead!
Quick note: I’m going to continue Monday Motivations through August, then take a break to do more Bowl Game stories. Then I might do more Monday Motivations in the future. I’m figuring it out as I go! Thanks for being here!
I love this, I’m dealing with preschool students that have this guy come around often. Thanks for the daily laughs!
Please put punching guy on a t-shirt.
